Council reviews safe streets to school

Oxnard—The Public Works and Transportation Committee approved its Annual Safe Routes to School Plan on Tuesday, November 9.

Jose Rivera, an Associate Engineer in the Traffic Engineering Division, presented the plan and said the Safe Routes to School (SRTS) Program is a federally established initiative developed by the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) to enhance the safety and overall experience for students walking to and from school.

“Local and Regional Agencies developed the SRTS program to create: Non-Infrastructure recommendations for educational outreach and walk audits, and infrastructure recommendations, like sidewalks and crosswalks,” he said. “These programs focus on neighborhoods around schools serving all grade levels.”

The City of Oxnard partnered with Fehr and Peers to develop a comprehensive SRTS Program, and, with its 40-year history of moving communities forward, he said it aimed to promote healthy, active modes of transportation.

 

“The City received a $300,000 Active Transportation Grant, with support from the Ventura County Transportation Commission,” he said. “The grant was used to develop an STRS Program for 26 schools in the Oxnard and Oxnard Union High School Districts. The expansion included renaming 25 schools in the Rio Elementary, Ocean View, and the Hueneme Elementary School Districts.”
