Oxnard-- The Community Services, Public Safety, Housing & Development Committee, Tuesday, March 22, approved its new residential curb cut policy in the city.
COMMUNITY Development Assistant Director Jeff Pengilley presented the item and said the policy is a collaborative between the Community Development and Public Works departments.
The city approved a policy statement in 1992 that substantially restricted curb cuts and cited maintenance expenses, difficulties navigating across sidewalks by the disabled community, potential city liabilities, and more.
A clarifying policy was issued for single-family residences adjacent to an alley in 2006.
“In 2007, the Bartolo and Hill Street Pilot program was implemented,” he said. “This allowed curb cuts with certain conditions in neighborhoods of Bartolo Square North, South, and Hill Street.”
He said the item is because of previous city council requests made regarding the curb cuts, most recently at the February 15 city council meeting.
The existing policy allows for only one curb cut per property, and where alley access is provided, the current policy does not allow for additional curb cuts.
