Day of the Dead celebration ok’d

Port Hueneme--The City Council unanimously approved a resolution granting a special use permit for the Tree Factory’s Day of the Dead Celebration, featuring food trucks, vendors, and live entertainment during its Monday, October 16 meeting.

The Southern California Stars, a local youth basketball club, is the beneficiary, and they turn no one away because of finances. Athletes compete while having good, positive role models to mentor.

Associate Planner Jose Coyotl presented the item and said the Day of the Dead includes an art contest, Day of the Dead displays, and live entertainment.

“The event will happen from 3-8 p.m. on November 2,” he said. “There will be 60-75 visitors and free admission.”

He said the live entertainment from 6-7:30 p.m. will include Mariachi Aztec performers.

Most of the event will take place on the northern side of 437 and 453 West Channel Islands Boulevard.

“There will be three canopies, each of which will have different display areas,” Coytl said. “One will feature the food vendors, another will feature chairs for the guests to view, and the other one will feature the event itself featuring the live entertainment and altars and pictures next to it.”
