Dia de Los Muertos Altar engages local residents

Oxnard-- The Recreation and Community Services Department for the City of Oxnard took the initiative and created a Dia de Los Muertos Altar on the stairway leading up to the Carnegie Arts Museum.

THE altar engaged the public, as community members added “photos, flowers and other items,” according to the department.

Area residents stopped by, paid respects, and took pictures. Senior Services Recreation Leader 3 Martha Jimenez was supervising the altar and said most people who stop by want to know how long the altar will be on display.

The skeleton at the top of the stairway has a headdress made out of tamale corn husks.

“It is modelled after La Catrina, which is a very prominent figure for the Day of the Dead,” she said. “She was inspired by one of my trips to Morelia Michoacan for Day of the Dead. I thought it would be fantastic to create our own here.”

Jimenez was the Curator of Education at the Carnegie Art Museum when it was open, and she used to make the Dia de Los Muertos Altar inside the museum.
