District Six special election is set

Oxnard--The City Council, Tuesday, November 18, voted 4-2 to select Option One to replace Vianey Lopez as District Six Representative.

Council Members Gabe Teran and Oscar Madrigal voted no. Teran initially supported a special election but said he supports equity for all Oxnard residents; he continuously reminds folks to look at it. Teran was appointed, served on the Council, and won a special election nine months later.

“Why would we treat District Six differently and allow the vacancy to happen for half a year,” he said.

The action sets a special election on March 7, and the seat will remain vacant until then.

District Six became open when Supervisor Vianey Lopez resigned her seat, on October 3, following her appointment to the Board of Supervisors, replacing Board Chair Carmen Ramirez, who was struck and killed in an auto accident.

Deputy City Attorney Jason Zaragoza presented the video and said the Council can adopt a resolution and give notice of a special election on March 7, 2023, or direct staff to begin the process of appointing a new District Six Council Member on or before November 29 and give notice of a special election on November 7, 2023, on or before…
