Oxnard-- After a one-year Covid-19 hiatus, the Second Annual Oxnard Insect Festival at Plaza Park was a celebration full of music, activities, education, arts and crafts, a costume contest, and the big feature, food that shows off the edible side of insects.
THE event brought a huge crowd to the park, as scores of kids learned about insects and their roles in nature. Kids of all ages had a great time, and city officials spent a large amount of time making the crowd feel welcome.
Assistant Director of Cultural and Community Services Renee Rakestraw said the Insect Festival is their first event after Covid-19.
“We have all the families out here enjoying all the smiles and friendly faces,” she said. “Everyone is enjoying all the insects and bugs. It’s exciting.”
She said the city was taking a responsible Covid-19 approach and asking everyone to be aware and stay safe.
“At 1 p.m., there is a tasting contest on the small stage, and we are going to see folks eat different types of crickets,” she said. “We also have a vendor selling cricket tacos.”
