Juneteenth Celebrates Black Accomplishments

Oxnard—The 34th Annual Juneteenth Celebration at Plaza Park, held on Saturday, June 21, was a fantastic, free family event featuring great food, local art, and memorable entertainment.

IT was a day to celebrate, but we also acknowledge that the journey is not over.

“Juneteenth is celebrated each June 19 and commemorates the emancipation of people in the US. The holiday was first celebrated in Texas, where on that date in 1865, in the aftermath of the Civil War, enslaved people were declared free under the terms of the 1862 Emancipation Proclamation.”

Angela Mitchell Landers Co-Chaired the event and said they hold the largest Juneteenth Celebration.

“We have a great time celebrating freedom, and our community is welcome,” she said. “We need it today more than ever.”

Pat Butler from the League of Women Voters Ventura County is educating the public, especially about the Electoral College.

 

We are an organization that polices civil rights,” she said. “We think everyone should be able to vote. The barbecue looked really good, but it was a little messy.”

Mattie Park stated that the League of Women Voters is non-partisan and does not endorse or impose a political party on candidates.
