Oxnard-- Plaza Park is back in full swing, as thousands gathered to celebrate Juneteenth Freedom Day Saturday, June 18.
THE celebration featured local artists, entertainment, exhibits, food, vendors, and a health and wellness expo.
County Clerk Elect Michelle Ascension is the first woman elected as County Clerk and Recorder and the first Black woman elected to a county office. She told the crowd that it’s a victory for Oxnard and Ventura County.
“I’m a product of Oxnard; I grew up here, and my family is celebrating 40 years in the city,” she said. “I’m a product of the Oxnard School District, Santa Clara High School, Oxnard College, and all these organizations made me who I am today.”
She thanked the 20th Century Onyx Club for their support.
“I just want to say in this theme of Juneteenth, there were three words that got me through a tough campaign that I just recently completed,” she said. “Faith, purpose, and unity apply to Juneteenth as well.
