Kite Day scores at Hueneme Beach

Port Hueneme—There was a slight breeze in the air, making it the perfect day for the inaugural Kite Day at Hueneme Beach on Saturday, July 20.

The event drew a large crowd of kite fans who gathered for the free event at the Alaska Airlines Memorial and made the mood “high as a kite.”

The City of Port Hueneme’s Parks and Recreation Department celebrated National Parks & Recreation Month. It gave away free kites to the first 50 families without the flyers, which filled the coastline.

City of Port Hueneme Recreation Coordinator Taylor Penny was pleased with how many people took advantage of Kite Day.

“We have a lot of kites in the air,” she said. “For a lot of these kids, it’s their first time flying a kite, so it’s cool to see their faces when they’re up in the air.”

She admitted to never flying a kite before but planned to get involved.

“Once I get everyone settled, I’m going to borrow a kite and try it out,” she said. “I think you’ve got to just get it up into the air and take it from there.”
