Levee Funding approved

Oxnard—The Finance & Governance Committee, during its Tuesday, November 26, meeting, accepted $1 million from the California Department of Water Resources (DWR).

The money will be used for the Santa Clara River Levee #3 Construction Project (SCR3).

Project Manager Adam Smith presented the item, which is part of the State’s 2023-2024 Budget, with Assembly Members Jacqui Irwin, Steve Bennett, and State Senator Monique Limon obtaining the funding.

“SCR3 is divided into four reaches from west to east and is an earth and levee system constructed by the County in the 1960s,” Smith said. “Regions 1,2, and 3 were redone and completed in February 2018, which extends from the project’s downstream limits at Victoria Avenue, where Ventura Avenue begins to parallel the Santa Clara River.”

He said the incomplete reach 4 extends upstream to the 101 crossing to the downstream limits of SCR 1.

“Upon completion of the project, SCR3 will achieve FEMA (Federal Emergency Management Agency) levee certification and the $1 million contribution provides crucial funding towards completing SCR4,” he said.
