Lowriders honored in Oxnard

Oxnard—The City Council took a few minutes on Tuesday, July 17, to honor its Lowrider Community.

A large group accepted the award, which Council Member Gage Teran said the State of California declared the first Sunday of the summer as California Lowrider Day.

“The City of Oxnard has long been home to a rich, diverse car culture that has allowed cultural identity while defying racial discrimination and class identification,” he said. “For decades, our Lowrider Community has helped raise 1,000s of dollars annually for local schools and community organizations and coordinates canned food and toy drives to serve local families and bring joy to children, especially during the holiday seasons.”

He said the Lowrider Community volunteered their time and vehicles to chauffeur many local residents, including City, County, and State Dignitaries, in processions at various parades.

“The Lowrider Community has maintained a mutually respectful partnership with the Oxnard Police Department to show community unity,” he said. “During the Covid pandemic, various car club members joined together to form the Covid Cruisers to bring joy and happiness to many children and families, to celebrate with many children and families who could not celebrate due to social distancing regulations.
