Memorial Day Ceremony approved by Council

Port Hueneme--The City Council approved its Memorial Day Ceremony with staff direction during its Monday, January 16, meeting.

The Council requested the item for the meeting, which included information from Councilman Steven Gama, who made the request, which is going to be a lost at sea memorial theme with a Memorial Day ceremony at 8 a.m. Monday, May 27, at the Hueneme Pier.

The ceremony will honor all military personnel making the ultimate sacrifice, emphasizing those lost at sea.

City Manager James Vega emphasized that Port Hueneme has a special connection to those lost at sea, as the La Jenelle, formerly the Bahama Star and Bouriquin, was one of the first ships sanctioned by the U.S. Government to conduct burials at sea as a hospital ship in the Pacific theater.

Gama said the City officials will begin preparations with different officials and invited elected officials and members of Military organizations and others to make the event happen.
