MLK Celebration: Mission Possible

Oxnard—The Oxnard Performing Arts Center Corporation (OPAC) was full of love, life, and hope on Monday, January 20, as the 39th Annual Martin Luther King Celebration marked progress but noted the work is not done.

THE day started with the march at Plaza Park and progressed to the OPAC, which fosters inclusive programming, cultural and artistic exchange, and the development of people-centered spaces.

“The Martin Luther King, Jr. Committee of Ventura County was established in 1986 to provide continuous awareness to Ventura County residents about Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and celebrate his dream through an annual birthday observance, Freedom March, and program acknowledging the positive achievements and accomplishments of individuals within the community.”

Petty Officer First Class Victoria Witherspoon was part of a significant Military presence from Naval Base Ventura and said it was her first year volunteering for such an important event.

 

“Dr. Martin Luther King brought the people together, and he made sure that everyone had a fair stake and chance,” Witherspoon said. “We have more work to do.

MLK Committee Member Del Sdelsean said Dr. King stands for peace, justice for all, and equality.
