Port Hueneme—The City Council received an update about the Museum Rehabilitation Project and approved a request of the Ad Hoc Museum Governance Committee to reconstitute the Port Hueneme Historical Museum Commission and provide the Staff with direction during its Monday, June 3 meeting and recommend future actions.
City Manager Charles James Vega said they’ve been meeting frequently with the Museum Committee and are on a bi-weekly schedule to get the Museum reopened.
Deputy City Manager Charles Peretz said that, about 50 years ago, the Port Hueneme Museum operations were extensively supported by community members.
“The Port Hueneme City Council approved bylaws for a Historical Museum Commission,” he said. “The bylaws empowered the Commission to manage, operate, and regulate the Historical Museum.”
He said the Commission and community volunteers have extensively supported the Museum’s operations for decades.
“During that time, a wide array of artifacts and exhibits have been collected,” he said. “By the end of 2017, the Museum Commission stopped holding public meetings, and although the volunteers continued, the Commission itself didn’t continue operating.”
