Port Hueneme-- A huge crowd came out to Hueneme Beach Saturday, May 21, as the NAMI (National Alliance on Mental Illness) Walk and fundraiser supports everyone affected by mental illness, so they live healthy, fulfilling lives supported by a caring community.
NAMI Ventura County Executive Director Roberta Griego said the event is their 17th Annual NAMI Walk, and the group has been in Ventura County for over 40 years.
“We’re here to support, educate and advocate for the families and the peers that have mental illness,” she said. “This is our largest fundraiser, and it’s our first year in Port Hueneme. We normally have our walks at the Ventura Beach Promenade.”
She said mental health treatment has come a long way since the antiquated and outdated treatments in the 1960s.
“We believe that a person can have a recovery to a stage where they can be citizens and be out with wonderful jobs, she said. “It’s certainly come round robin.”
She said the mental health stigma still exists, and there is still a long way to go before that word becomes obsolete.
