OFD Smoke Detectors save lives

Oxnard-- The Fire Prevention Division’s annual report to the City Council continues with the public education involved with the program, highlighted by smoke detector installations across all communities.

The Community Services Public Safety, Housing & Development Committee adopted a resolution acknowledging receipt of a report about inspecting certain occupancies on Tuesday, Feb. 27.

Fire Chief Alex Hamilton noted that 5,000 smoke detectors have been installed in neighborhood residences, and the department is engaging Neighborhood Councils for fire safety messaging.

“We have a significant problem with deaths in homes that do not have working smoke detectors,” he said. “We’re getting smoke detectors out and in homes, and by the end of Feb., we will have installed over 7,500 smoke detectors from a grant we received about 2.5 years ago.”

He said the department received an extraordinary extension from FEMA (Federal Emergency Management Agency), which gave the Oxnard Fire Department another 12 months to use the remaining funds.

“We’ve had an incredible response from the community, and this has all been led by the Fire Prevention Division,” he said. “On Saturday, Feb. 10, we did a smoke detector installation where we had over 95 volunteers come to help out from 10-12…
