Oxnard-- The City Council, Tuesday, November 1, approved an agreement to fund the future development of the Ormond Beach public access park.
The vote authorizes agreement A-8509 with Ormond Beach Power LLC (GenOn) to establish a dedicated fund to develop a future public access park at Ormond Beach if the State of California extends the operating life at the generating station into the next few years.
City Manager Alex Nguyen presented the video and said the power plant currently operates under an extension mandated in 2021 and running through 2023.
“During the term of that extension, we were successful in negotiating with Gen On to establish a $25 million trust fund that can be used to dismantle the power plant once it is decommissioned,” he said. “Now that fund is being held for us in trust at the Ventura County Community Foundation. At this point, we have $15 million in the fund.”
He said the state passed assembly bill 205, empowering the state to essentially provide another round of extensions for the power plants across California to meet the state’s electricity need and grid reliability.
