Oxnard lawn bowlers are family

Oxnard—The sun was shining, and the Joslyn- Oxnard Lawn Bowling Club was out en masse, enjoying the day.

The practice is serious; this team competes with area teams, but the mood is friendly as everyone tries to help each other.

Gloria Brown is the club’s secretary.

“If you want to have a great time, come on down,” she said. “We have free lessons, and you can use our bowls.”

Gloria started lawn bowling 20 years ago, after she retired.

“I didn’t know what I was going to do, so I come here every day except Tuesday and Thursday,” she said. “I had a neighbor who walked through the neighborhood all the time. We stopped at the signal one day, and said have you ever tried lawn bowling, and I never heard of it. He gave us four lessons, and away we went.”

Peter Proto comes from London and found a home with the Oxnard Lawn Bowlers.

“I’ve been doing this for 15 years in England,” he said. “My son lives here, and I joined this about three years ago. It’s lovely here. I enjoy the weather.”

He has a simple strategy.

“I meet people and enjoy myself,” he said.
