Oxnard refuse rate study reveals inflation issues

Oxnard--The Public Works and Transportation Committee received a preliminary refuse cost of Service report during its Tuesday, November 14 meeting.

THE proposed rate hikes can reach up to $58.59 for a monthly 96-gallon service.

The report includes trash, recycling, organics, and green waste information. The City’s environmental resources division has over 50,000 accounts, most of which are residential accounts.

Assistant Public Works Director Brian Yanez presented the report and said the City of Oxnard handles 589 million pounds of solid municipal waste, over 25 million pounds of recycled material, and 28 million pounds of organic waste.

“Collectively, this material is over 644 million pounds,” Yanez said. “The entire Empire State Building weighs 730 million pounds.”

“We have weekly collections for residential, commercial, and industrial customers,” he continued. “We have 40 routes, and we collect from these customers recyclables, trash, yard waste, green waste, and organics, which then comes to our material recycling facility, and we separate and dispose the proper recyclables to the proper location, as well as the organics to the proper locations.”

 

Yanez said the City bales and sells recyclables.

“We have 179 employees at Del Norte, 138 vehicles, with 109 of those vehicles being heavy duty,”…
