Pedestrian Safety Campaign advances in PH

Port Hueneme—The City Council received an update about its traffic and pedestrian safety efforts during its Monday, October 7, meeting, noting efforts over the past year and voted to move forward with the Pedestrian Safety Campaign.

The City has addressed community concerns over the past 12 months, which include reinstating the traffic and motorcycle divisions and realigning parking enforcement within the traffic division to focus on safety-related matters.

City Manager James Vega said they had a couple of conversations about the Pedestrian Safety Campaign and updated the Council on things implemented, showing the City’s holistic approach.

“We’re proposing a simple Pedestrian Safety Campaign that would allow us to partner with the Port of Hueneme and the Base and to get the word out, and school kids to get the word out about pedestrians safety,” he said.

The Public Works Department has installed striping, crosswalks, and rapid flashing beacons in different locations throughout the City, he said, increasing awareness and providing safe areas to cross the street.

“We’ve reduced speed limits on several streets in the last year, including Channel Islands Boulevard, and we did the traffic study to justify that reduction in speed limit,” he said. “We’ve updated ADA (Americans…
