Port Hueneme-- The City Council, November 7, got an update about the homeless situation in Port Hueneme.
Officer Henry Montelongo presented the report and updated the group about his experiences as the City’s homeless liaison officer.
He started with six quotes from the population; why, if I get free money and food, being in a shelter is beneath me; I don’t want people telling me what to do; I’d rather sleep in the streets as long as I can do my drugs; I just want a free place with no rules, and I’m ready for the help, what do I need to do?
“These six quotes are actual quotes from individuals who I’ve contacted across the streets of Hueneme,” he said. “The response is why they became homeless and continue to be homeless.”
He hopes to get the population to the last quote about receiving help, and they see it’s time for them to make a change and accept services that will improve their situation.
“Last December, when I did the first presentation for the Council, there was approximately 15 resident homeless within the City, and these are individuals who have made their home in Port Hueneme,” he said.…
