Port Hueneme—The City Council approved a Memorandum of Understanding with the California Joint Powers Insurance Authority (CJPIA) during its Monday, September 16 meeting.
The action allows the Authority to perform Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) inspections for related inspections and develop a transition plan.
City Manager James Vega said the item is a recommended best practice, and all Cities are recommended to complete it.
“This reduces liability and long-term costs in the future, and there is an immediate cost not in the budget,” he said. “We don’t recommend funding things from our reserve often, but if we do, it’s something that’s a true must-do, something we need to do, and has longterm financial benefits. We’re recommending that we dig into our savings to pay these things, and the goal is that, in the long term, it’ll save the City and taxpayers money.”
Deputy City Manager Charles Peretz said Title II of the Americans with Disability Act mandates accessibility standards at public facilities and obligates State and Local Governments to ensure Services have activities available to the public.
