Port Hueneme--The City Council adopted a resolution recognizing a new Sister City relationship with Puerto Vallarta, Mexico, and authorized establishing a Sister City Committee during its April 3 meeting.
The City joined Sister Cities International on May 21, 2018, which “unites tens of thousands of citizen diplomats and volunteers of approximately 500 communities, 2,000 partnerships in 140 countries. California has 79 communities with sister city programs.”
Former Mayor and Council Member Sylvia Munoz-Schnopp led off the conversation, and she said Port Hueneme’s Sister Cities’ history goes back several years during her tenure as a Council Member from 2008 until 2020.
“My interest sparked after attending a League of California Cities conference and many conferences that came after the first one in 2009,” she said. “I made mention of this interest to previous City Managers, and since the City of Port Hueneme has an international focus due to the reach of our special districts comprised of Naval Base Ventura County, as well as the Port of Hueneme, I realized how appropriate a Sister City Program would be for our City.”
