PH City Council requests smoking prohibition ordinance

Port Hueneme—The City of Port Hueneme’s Smoking Prohibition story continued as the City Council directed Staff to consider all the recommendations about a smoking prohibition ordinance in Multi-Unit-Housing (MUH) residences and report back to the Council for action during its Monday, October 21, meeting.

Several public speakers requested the City of Port Hueneme adopt a smoking ban within Multi-Unit Housing on November 20, 2023, and shared information about Cities with such a ban already in place.

The City Council received survey results on July 1, sent out to property managers, and received additional public comments. The body directed the Staff to review smoking bans in Moorpark and Carpenteria and research options for implementing smoking prohibitions in MUH.

Deputy City Manager Charles Peretz said that according to the American Non-Smokers’ Rights Foundation, 85 California municipalities enacted laws prohibiting smoking in all MUH Units, and 78 percent of them prohibited smoking in rented and owner-occupied units.

“There are 16 Municipalities that opted for partial smoking bans, and while those can take different types of forms, most commonly, with partial smoking bans, they are enacted by prohibiting smoking in newly occupied buildings and newly leased units,” he said.
