Pier Gate Fence coming down

Port Hueneme--The City Council voted to remove the chain link fence at the Pier Gate and track statistics to determine whether a permanent gate is needed in the future during its Tuesday, Feb. 20 meeting.

The City’s pier did not historically include a gate. During COVID, the closure of the Hueneme Pier was instituted to prevent the congregation of groups and helped eliminate touch points that needed to be sanitized daily.

During a recent meeting, City Manager James Vega said they’ve talked about making the gate more aesthetically pleasing or installing a permanent iron gate at the pier.

“We went back and started to look at the past reports and get everything in order, and we started to look at the crime statistics over the past few years, and it jumped out that in 2019, the year before COVID and the year before any discussion of the gate that we had 41 calls for service from 10 p.m. until 7 a.m. to the Police Department,” he said. “Last year, coming out of COVID, from 10 p.m. until 7 a.m., we had 41 calls for service. With adding the gate, we ended up having the same calls for service.”
