PRE-JUNETEENTH commemorates freedom, joy and family

Oxnard--The Oxnard Public Library hosted a special event Saturday, June 10, as the Juneteenth Committee of Ventura County hosted the pre-celebration and noted that it’s like a pre-Super Bowl Party.

LAWRENCE D. LEE hosted the celebration and said the attendees were winners for attending the event.

“Juneteenth was a time of celebration for so many and also a time of reflection,” he said. “When General Granger rode into Galveston (Texas) with his troops to announce to the enslaved that today was your day of Freedom, it had some attachments and addendums to it.”

Lee said the attachment said you’re free but suggested you can’t go anywhere.

“There was a statement made that we’re going to change from the master-to-slave relationship to owner and employee status,” he said. “We don’t want you going anywhere.”

He said it came to the port they established for protection; they didn’t want them.

 

“Unfortunately, like most African-Americans, we don’t always listen,” he said. “People went out and sought people who were sold into slavery, which were far away,” he said. “They established communities where they could grow and thrive.”

He said Juneteenth should encourage people to rededicate themselves and ensure everyone is free.
