Public Art Funds approved

Oxnard—The Community Services Public Safety, Housing, and Economic Committee, on Tuesday, April 28, approved a request for the appropriation of funds from the Public Art Fund for the installation of public art.

Cultural Arts Manager Julie Estrada presented the appropriation request, and she requested $150,000 from the available Public Art Fund balance available to the Downtown Arts Hub Murals Program for the design and installation of asphalt art in the Central Business District.

“There has been a Council focus on revitalizing Downtown Oxnard through arts and culture,” she said. “In 2009, the Council adopted the Cultural Master Plan, which established a long-term vision for integrating art into public spaces.”

In 2016, she said the Downtown Vision Plan identified public art to enhance vibrancy in the area, and in 2018, Cultural and Community Services (CCS) began the installation of a Downtown Arts Hub, focused on mural installations.

In 2020, the flagship murals were installed, with the Cultural Arts Commission playing a central role.

“Those are the two large murals located at the Civic Center,” she said. “CCS (Cultural Community Services) also launched several large art initiatives, like Mini Murals, and, the following year, the Oxnard Arts Academy.”
