Public Defender’s Office updates Supervisors

Ventura-- The Board of Supervisors, Tuesday, May 24, received a 2022-2023 budget presentation for the Public Defender’s Office, the Probation Agency, Human Services, and Healthcare Agency.

County Executive Officer Dr. Sevet Johnson said as they have done historically, departments come forward and present their budget and talk about what their staff and agency do.

The proposed net budget calls for $18.592 million, with $24.168 million in appropriations and $5.576 million in revenue.

Ventura County Public Defender Claudia Bautista led off the update, and she said the Defender’s Office has done lots of powerful and positive work thanks to the Board’s budgetary support and leadership.

“Every day, we defend, protect and serve the community members of Ventura County,” she said. “Our budget is primarily funded by the general fund, primarily salaries and benefits. Our revenues that our department may generate through the imposition of imposed statutory fees and fines. This Board should continue to expect, as we continue to expect, they will continue to decrease as the state prioritizes eliminating the cost and the burden and having to fund their own defense.”

She said they expect to employ 126 full-time employees, with seven coming from its first public defense grant.
