Ramirez county accomplishments were many

Oxnard-- The Carmen Ramirez Candlelight Vigil story continues with a list of her accomplishments that Barbara Macri-Ortiz told the crowd brought Ventura County into the 21st Century.

“The first Latina Public Defender in the history of Ventura County,” she said. “The first African- American CEO (Chief Executive Officer) and a woman at that. Carmen did that in a climate that was anti-everything.”

According to a report from the Oxnard Police Department, on August 12, Ramirez was reportedly struck by a 2020 GMC Sierra and taken to the hospital but did not survive her injuries.

Judge Manuel J. Covarrubias told the crowd that Ramirez was a great person, role model, and leader.

“She devoted her life to helping others,” Covarrubias said. “She chose a lifelong career to be a true public servant. She literally and unselfishly took on the burden and obligation of being a public official.”

He said her goal was to provide a better life for all members of the community, including those people in the society that are not heard or discounted.
