Refuse Rates passage draws crowd

Oxnard—After an extended public hearing on Tuesday, March 19, the City Council unanimously passed an ordinance establishing new solid waste rates and fees within the City.

The new rates will go into effect July 1, 2024, and increase yearly to meet the City’s need to keep up with inflation for five years.

The City’s public hearing allowed residents to protest and for the Council to review and approve the first reading by title only, an ordinance of the City Council to establish new solid waste rates and fees for customer use and service from the Environmental Service Division.

The California Environmental Quality Act (CEQA) does not apply to the ordinance.

Council Member Bert Perello told the crowd he supports the new rate.

“The fee proposal this Council has agreed on is the lowest of all the possibilities,” he said. “They can stagger it, they can stop the first year, it’s the lowest cost to the consumer of all the possibilities.”

He said the fines incurred because the City does not follow State Mandates can financially damage Oxnard.

“There’s a lot of money at risk,” he said.
