Supervisors commemorate Black History Month

Ventura--The Board of Supervisors proclaimed February as Black History Month during its inspiration, Tuesday, February 6.

Chair Kelly Long felt honored to present such an honor on behalf of the Board of Supervisors.

“Every year, during the month of February, our board recognizes Back History Month and presents a proclamation to many of our leading Black Civic Organizations,” she said. “I wanted to do this under the moment of inspiration to highlight so much of the good work being done in the African-American Communities right here in Ventura County.”

She read a portion of the proclamation and said, “Whereas February is dedicated to Black History Month, honoring the triumphs and struggles throughout U.S. History, it is an opportunity to spotlight and celebrate the achievements that African-Americans have accomplished in this Country,” she said. “The month of February was selected to celebrate Black History Month to honor the birth of two individuals whose actions drastically altered the future of Black Americans, Abraham Lincoln, which I share a birthday, the U.S. President who issued the Emancipation Proclamation, and Frederick Douglass, one of the nation’s leading abolitionists, author and public speaker.”
