Oxnard—The City Council, on Tuesday, December 16, re-elected Council Member Gabriela Rodriguez as its next Mayor Pro Tem on a 5-2 vote over Council Member Gabriela Rodriguez.
City Clerk Luly Lopez presented the selection of the Mayor Pro Tem, noting that the Mayor Pro Tem will serve in the event of the Mayor’s absence.
“On December 11, 2024, the Mayor announced that the Mayor Pro Tem position would be a one-year term,” she said. “The California Department of Codes, 34905 and 36801, do not specify a fixed term of Office for the Mayor Pro Tem; instead, the position serves at the pleasure of the City Council.”
The Mayor presides over City Council meetings, and she said both the Mayor and the Mayor Pro Tem have the same voting power as any Council member.
State Law does not provide an election process, and she said one way to choose would be to open the floor for nominations.
Any member of the Council can make a nomination and can nominate themselves. A majority of members is required to select the Mayor Pro Tem.
