Vantage Patrol Robot donated to OPD

Oxnard-- The Community Services, Public Safety, and Housing Development Committee, Tuesday, June 14, approved the donation of a Vantage Patrol Robot to the Oxnard Police Department.

Special Operations Commander Tim Kelley presented the item and said the donor, Thahn Doan is a California businessman who believes technology provides greater safety for officers and community members dealing with incidents involving emotionally disturbed individuals, natural disasters, hazardous material incidents, and incidents involving armed and violent suspects.

“The CEO (Chief Executive Officer) of Transcend Robotics, Mr. Phil Walker, contacted the Oxnard Police Department several months ago regarding a private donor who wished to donate one of his robots to the Oxnard Police Department,” Kelley said. “Mr. Doan learned that Transcend Robotics manufactures a small robot that allows officers to deal with mentally and emotionally disturbed individuals as well as armed and violent suspects and other hazardous incidents from a safe distance. Mr. Doan purchased 30 Transcend Robotics Vantage Patrol Robots and has been donating them to various law enforcement agencies throughout the state.”

He said the Santa Maria Police Department, Santa Barbara Police Department, the Fresno County Police Department as well as Oxnard were some of the agencies selected.
