Water Rates and Streets highlight public comments

Ventura—The Public Comments during the Tuesday, October 22, City of Ventura Council Meeting were all about quality of life, and asking for volunteers to help on committees.

Wendy Chatow appreciates the fixed sidewalks on Victoria and Telephone, up to Telegraph.

“It is a big help for us, anybody in wheelchairs, walkers, and anybody who has to walk that much,” she said.

Kevin Daily said the City Council voted 4-3 to raise water rates at its last meeting.

“This is the time of high inflation and living expenses affecting the lower and middle classes in the City,” he said. "Under Proposition 218, a notice will be mailed to all water customers, allowing them to vote against the increases.”

He said citizens can do three things:

“They can wait for the official Prop 218 notice in the mail,” he said. “Secondly, follow the instructions to submit your written protest by the stated deadline. Third, friends, neighbors, and fellow residents should do the same.”

If the rate protest doesn’t meet the majority threshold, he said the matter will return to the City Council this December, giving the City Council one final opportunity to vote it down.
