ALPR program to expand in Oxnard

Oxnard-- The Community Services, Public Safety, & Housing Committee, Tuesday, November 23, received a report on the city’s Automated License Plate Reader (ALPR) program.

THE police department is increasing its technology use to keep the city safe and fight crime through the use of community cameras, traffic cameras, and ALPR.

The Oxnard Police Department’s ALPR program started in 2017 when the city council approved the purchase of three mobile ALPRs and expanded to 12 ALPRs in 2019.

Assistant Chief Denise Shadinger presented the item to the committee. She said the police department receives requests to add additional cameras in public spaces like parks, sports fields, or areas where violent crime recently occurred.

“ALPR technology is a fixed or mobile license plate recognition camera that takes photos of license plates capturing the date, time, and GPS coordinates of where the photo was taken,” she said. “It is a means to gather objective evidence and facts about vehicles. Photos are retained in a searchable database where vehicles can be searched by make, model, color, license plate number, or unique identifying information, such as previous traffic collision damage or bumper stickers and decals.”
