Council Recognizes Soroptimist Club

Oxnard—The City Council, Tuesday, January 6, recognized the Soroptimist Club with a proclamation declaring January 17, as STOP Human Trafficking Awareness Day.

SOROPTIMIST In­ter­national consists of Soroptimist International of the Americas, Soroptimist International of Europe, Soroptimist International of Great Britain & Ireland and Soroptimist International of the Southwest Pacific. Our network of around 72,000 club members in 121 countries works at a local, national and international levels.

Mayor Pro Tem Gabe Teran read the proclamation to Lori and Debbie and he said it’s the 19th Annual Stop Human Trafficking and Sexual Slavery Community Awareness in Ventura County.

“The Optimists provide education and uplift Women and Girls who’ve struggled through hardships and in some cases, human trafficking,” he said. “Whereas January is known as Human Trafficking Awareness Month, it’s not time that individuals are home, and workplaces should educate themselves and learn the signs of trafficking.”

”Every 30 seconds, someone becomes a victim of Human Trafficking, fraud, or coercion," he said. “Trafficking primary involves involuntary servitude and commercial sex acts. About 75 percent of Human Trafficking Victims are trafficked for exploitation, while 25 percent are trafficked for labor and exploitation.”
