D.A. to investigate eviction notices

Oxnard—In his Tuesday, April 2, report to the City Council, City Manager Alex Nguyen said the Staff, City Attorney’s Office, and Housing Department are working to resolve residents’ issues. They agree that the eviction notices residents are receiving are “woefully deficient.”

DURING public comments, the City Council heard a comment from a Via Oxnard tenant saying they were being evicted and were told the evictions were stopped. The City Council approved the urgency ordinance on February 2.

They tried to pay the rent but were told they would not accept money orders, were not allowed to be at the residence, and to contact their attorneys. They were given eight days to vacate.

The speaker was told they were giving him a different, more expensive apartment.

“Our City Attorney’s Office, rightly so, needs to be very measured in the actions that they take on behalf of the City because we can’t represent individual tenants,” Nguyen said. “However, I do believe that we can represent the general public interest in defending our ordinances.”

He hasn’t reviewed all the information available, but based on what he sees, “it certainly smells wrong.”
