Oxnard—Commander Dan Whitmer’s Oxnard Police Department 2023 Calendar Year Military Use Report continues with tracked armored vehicles that provide ballistic protection and utilize a tracked system.
"THE Oxnard Police Department does not own this type of vehicle,” he said. “The Ventura County Sheriff’s Department owns a Rook, a small ballistic caterpillar device which mitigates risks to SWAT Officers while performing dangerous tasks during high-risk incidents.”
He said the Sheriff’s Department makes the equipment available to the Oxnard Police Department, which used it once during the 2023 reporting period.
“There are no costs to the City associated with its use, and no complaints were received,” he said.
The Department owns 13 Command and Control Vehicles built or modified to facilitate operational control and direction of public safety units.
“Two are large command vehicles, two are Sprinter vans, one DUI Enforcement Trailer, and eight Ford Explorer Sport Utility Vehicles,” he said. “The Ford Explorers are used daily, and the large command vehicles were used 10 times in 2023.”
He said the UAS van was used 85 times, and the traffic van was used 12 times.
“After the initial purchase cost, the only ongoing costs are for fuel and maintenance, approximately $63,400,”…
