Oxnard-- The Oxnard Police Department and Ventura County District Attorney’s Office reported Tuesday, August 21, that For the first time in the nation’s history, over 100,000 people died from drug overdoses in a single year.
FENTANYL poisoning is the leading cause of death for adults aged 18-45 in the United States, surpassing suicide, gun violence, and car accidents.
Deaths in America from fentanyl poisoning crosses all age groups and doubled from 32,745 fatalities to 62,178 fatalities between April 2019 and April 2021.
In 2021, Oxnard Police officers responded to 283 overdose calls, and 35 were fatal. In 2022, Officers responded to 287 calls, and 40 were fatal.
The total number of drug overdose fatalities (75) is nearly four times the number of deaths caused by violent city crime (21)within the same time period.
Responding Oxnard Police Department officers administered 64 Naloxone (“Narcan”) doses in 2021 and 58 in 2022 and only reflects doses administered by police officers and doesn’t include the number of doses administered by EMS and other first responders.
So far, near the end of August 2023, officers have administered 56 doses - nearly the entire year in 2022.
