Oxnard-- Residents filled the Oxnard Performing Arts Center Tuesday, September 20, to see three future visions of Fisherman’s Wharf at Channel Islands Harbor.
THE three groups were selected for their Request for Proposals (RFP) and outlined their visions at the workshop.
Fisherman’s Wharf is run down and needs an upgrade. An apartment complex with a shopping center was rejected by the Coastal Commission due to parking and traffic concerns and becoming an expensive community enjoyed by residents only while excluding others.
Harbor Director Michael Tripp welcomed the crowd and introduced Moderator Nick Dietch of RRM Design Group, who said the workshop is important.
“The community is constantly evolving, and this is part of that process,” he said. “I am pleased that the people at the Harbor would trust me to help you through the process this evening.”
Dietch said Fisherman’s Wharf was Martin Smith’s vision about 60 years ago and was cool during its time.
“It was a unique opportunity for people to gather, shop, and enjoy the waterfront,” he said. “It was very picturesque, and it was a vision at that time.”
He said the vision had its life and end, and “something needs to happen.”
