Inclusivity is part of Park grant

Port Hueneme-- The Bubbling Springs Park upgrade story continues with Council Member Steven Gama asking about access to the parking area.

THE Council adopted a resolution accepting $7.5 million from the Statewide Park Development and Community Revitalization (SPP) grant on Monday, November 6, to construct the Bubbling Springs Park Renewal Project.

Gama asked how the parking area would be addressed.

“We will no longer have the cars driving up now,” Housing & Facilities Maintenance Director Gabby Basua said. “The Little League might decide they need a car to drive up just to drop off items to the snack bar, but the entire parking lot adjacent to J Street is going to have accessibility onto the fields, and they are being reconstructed to meet the ADA (Americans with Disabilities Act) standards.”

City Manager James Vega said ADA accessibility that was not foreseen initially has costs.

“With the whole site being ADA accessible, an ADA-accessible sidewalk on one side, and the trail being upgraded to ADA accessible, that’s part of the grading improvements,” he said.

He said the park’s third element is constructing a Dog Park, and the concept has evolved into a small and large dog park, two separate areas.
