Keeping districts intact is a challenge

Oxnard-- The conversation about redistricting the City Council districts continues with comments from Barbara Macri-Ortiz, who offered her opinion on the redistricting maps.

SHE said it was important to keep neighborhoods together and maintain as much of the existing districts as possible.

“We’ve just gone through redistricting, and we’re now just getting our council members going, and I think it’s something to be strengthened,” she said. “I’m really pleased to have six districts, and I think we have great representation starting. I think we should continue that trend as much as we can.”

Macri-Ortiz looked at the three public maps, and she was concerned about some of the neighborhoods splitting.

“I went past them and looked at the consultants,” she said. “I also had a problem with the last one, 203, that had a similar problem with the neighborhoods. The two I think you should examine the closest are maps 201 and 202. I think they minimize the neighborhood splits, and they’ve kept the variation below 10 percent. I think 201 is probably the best, in my opinion, and I think it sticks the closest to the existing council districts.”
