Oxnard--The City Council ratified an application to the Outdoor Recreation Legacy Grant Program (ORLP) for Campus Park during the Tuesday, Feb. 20 meeting.
THE Campus Park project will not exceed $7 million, with a 1:1 match required coming from the State Grant Funds during the Campus Park Activation Project Phase 1.
The list of improvements includes two additional phases that add community-requested elements like public restrooms, a new dog park, a community orchard, a cultural garden, community garden amenities, a multi-use field/meadow, additional landscaping and other amenities and support items related to the elements.
Grants Coordinator Eric Humel presented the application and said the ORLP Grant is a competitive grant program of the National Park Service, and the purpose of the ORLP program is to provide new or significantly improved recreation opportunities in urban disadvantaged communities.
“The program currently prioritizes the selection of projects that integrate nature-based projects where nature is a major element of or strongly supports the proposed recreational activity,” he said.
He said phase 1 is currently finishing up and is at 90 percent. The grant was submitted in 2019, but the project has experienced delays due to staffing challenges, which caused the costs to escalate.
