Nguyen advocates agri-business

Oxnard—In his Tuesday, July 15, report to the City Council, City Manager Alex Nguyen said in the 1970s, small groups of mothers started gathering in Argentina wanting to know what had happened to their sons, because the Federal Government “goon squads” took them away.

HE said they became known as the Mothers of the Disappeared in Argentina in the 1970s.

“The children of this Country were living in pretty unspeakable times,” he said. “I understand a lot is going on, fear, frustration, and anger, and I know a lot of work is going on in the background, including among many of you. “

He pointed out in the public discourse that, to him, it appears there’s only one major stakeholder who seems to be absent in this episode.

“It has occurred before in this Country’s history,” he said. “They blame the most vulnerable people for the failures of the economy. “This is about agri-business, and for more than 100 years, migrant workers have flowed fluidly back and forth.”

In the early days of agribusiness, he said they were white European migrant workers, and over time, that changed, whether it be Filipino, Japanese, or Mexican.
