Channel Islands--Boaters and their families gained valuable information at the Channel Islands U.S. Coast Guard Safe Boating Open House Saturday, May 21, as local organizations and public safety agencies offered information on the latest in boating safety.
COAST Guard Auxiliary Captain Norm Bundek said his group is marking National Safe Boating Week.
“This is the start of the week, and this is a program where we let the public know about safety in the water,” he said. “At 11 a.m. today, we had a demonstration of the Coast Guard helicopter from Point Magu, where we did a demonstration of a rescue. We had a sailboat with a smoke bomb on it to simulate a fire. Two people were on it, they jumped off, and the helicopter came in for one of them, and the safety group from the Harbor came with their jet skis.”
“How does the Coast Guard work, and how do they save people,” he said about questions the public asked. “How does the Harbor save people? Our job here is to give as much information about boating and safety as possible to the public. Our job is to help the Coast Guard save lives.”
