Oxnard—Part two of the City’s balanced budget continues with Assistant City Manager Eric Sonstegard discussing its progress and challenges.
"IMPROVEMENTS to our Staff and Council, on the Fourth Street Corridor, between the train station and Downtown, will include curb extensions, crosswalks, and bike lanes,” he said. “We’ll have pedestrians and cyclists move throughout downtown.”
Construction on the corridor is scheduled to begin in 2026, and he said they are excited that construction is underway to increase the transient occupancy tax.
“The City’s first gateway monument sign was installed in April 2025 at Pleasant Valley Road, adding Vibrant Colors and Lighting to display the City’s name proudly,” he said. We observed significant impacts on infrastructure and natural resources and discussed the social implications on both sides.”
Some challenges that the City of Oxnard faces include ongoing litigation to finance large capital projects through the municipal bonding process and a competitive labor market due to the fires that ravaged Los Angeles County earlier this year.
“That will envelop a lot of the construction labor during the rebuilding process,” he said. “There are unreliable supply chain issues, such as tariffs and potential wars.”
