Oxnard—The Public Works and Transportation Committee, on Tuesday, June 22, learned about the Oxnard storm drainage infrastructure and preparation measures for the predicted Super El Niño event.
CITY Engineer Morgan Kessler presented the item and recommended the Committee receive and file the report.
“Oxnard is geographically flat and rainwater drains very slowly,” he said. “The coming rainy season is anticipated to be potentially higher than normal, due to the El Niño phenomenon, and this is predicted to be a Super El Niño season.”
He said the June 23 Public Works and Transportation Committee meeting requested an update on the CIP (Capital Improvement Plan) and storm drain repair and maintenance activities.
“Storms are categorized into x-year events,” he said. “An example is the 10-year event, and this means a 10 percent chance of a certain rainfall over 24 hours at a specific location over a year.”
“This does not mean that such an event will only happen once in a year; in fact, 10-, 100-, or even 1,000-year events can happen back-to-back.”
The City has both CIP projects and maintenance programs in place to address stormwater issues.
