Public Works plays catch up and faces challenges

Oxnard-- The city council received an update about the Public Works Department during its Tuesday, May 17, meeting.

PUBLIC Works Director Michael Wolfe presented the video and said in addition to the day-to-day activities within the department, council priorities, including restoring the street paving cycle, repairing alleys, maintaining parks, parkways, and medians, tree trimming, cleaning up the city’s gateways, ensuring adequate future water supplies, building an Aquatic Center in South Oxnard and repairing the seawalls are moving forward.

“The engineering team has several projects in the final design phase or actively in construction,” he said. “Our parks, street landscaping, and trees division have contractors and in-house staff members addressing many years of deferred maintenance in our parks, medians, and parkways.”

The department inclu­des administration, asset management, main­tenance, engineering and transportation, enviro­nmental and operations, and water services.

He said the Parks Division, with 44 employees covering 39 square miles, is a busy team.

“Most of their day-to-day activities include addressing the many years of deferred maintenance that’s occurred across the city,” he said. “This is a daunting task and requires almost a daily prioritization of many needed activities.”
