Vets need each other today

Oxnard--The Veteran’s Day celebration at Plaza Park story continues with Army Veteran Sal Gonzales, who served in the Delta region of Vietnam through 1970.

He remains active in the community, is a Lion’s Club and Knights of Columbus member, and advocates pro-life activities, providing food for the needy, housing for the homeless, and the preservation of sight.

Gonzales said he was a guy who was told he would have a 60-minute life expectancy if he was dropped in a hostile fire zone.

“I want to talk about us Veterans more as a brotherhood and sisterhood of people who gave their lives in the honor and service of our Country,” he said. “For me, it was particularly challenging because one of the things that wasn’t in the Bible, I also studied for the priesthood, and then I went into the Infantry.”

He had to square those things together, and he’s dealt with those feelings throughout his life. When he was being considered for a club, it became known that he was an Infantry Officer and studied for the priesthood.

“One of the Ladies said how do you reconcile that, studying for the priesthood and being an infantry officer,” he said.…
